MLB Picks Today 7/31: Dylan Cease Strikeout Prop Leads the July 31st Card
Sports bettors searching for the best MLB picks today 7/31 will find several intriguing matchups on the Friday night schedule. However, after completing a full-market audit, only one wager earned official-pick status at Pappy’s PlayBook.
Tonight’s official selection is Dylan Cease Over 7.5 strikeouts. It receives a 5-Star rating, while the other betting angles discussed below remain leans.
That distinction is important. A lean may have statistical support, but it can still be missing the price, confirmation or matchup certainty required for an official release. My MLB betting framework treats a lean as a useful angle rather than a recommended wager.
Learn how the Pappy’s PlayBook betting ratings separate official selections from lower-confidence leans.
Today’s Official MLB Pick: Dylan Cease Over 7.5 Strikeouts (5*)
Game: St. Louis Cardinals at Toronto Blue Jays
Pick: Dylan Cease Over 7.5 strikeouts
Rating: to win $500
Playable to: -130
Pass at: -131 or worse
Automatic pass: Strikeout line moves to 8.5
His strikeout totals across his last five starts are:
12, 7, 11, 9 and 10
Cease has therefore recorded at least eight strikeouts in four of those five appearances, producing 49 total strikeouts during that span.
That recent form matters because Over 7.5 requires eight strikeouts. This is not a projection asking Cease to reach an unfamiliar ceiling. He has repeatedly cleared the number and has done so with meaningful margins in several recent starts.
Why Dylan Cease Over 7.5 Strikeouts Is the Best Bet
Cease has the type of arsenal that can create strikeouts independently of the opponent’s overall tendencies.
His velocity gives him the ability to challenge hitters at the top of the strike zone, while his breaking pitches provide legitimate chase and finishing weapons once he gets ahead. That gives the over more than one route to eight strikeouts.
St. Louis is not the most strikeout-prone lineup in baseball, which prevents this from receiving a major rating. However, the Cardinals have struck out more frequently in road games, and members of the projected lineup have displayed meaningful swing-and-miss tendencies against Cease.
His previous results against St. Louis have been mixed from a run-prevention standpoint, but the strikeouts have still appeared. Cease has recorded 21 strikeouts over 15⅓ career innings against the Cardinals. The runs he has allowed in those meetings matter less for this specific market than they would for a moneyline or earned-runs prop.
Cease does not need to earn a win or dominate the entire game. He needs to record eight strikeouts before Toronto removes him. According to Dylan Cease’s official MLB statistics, he enters tonight with 167 strikeouts over 113⅓ innings this season.
Cease’s Recent Workload Is the Main Concern
The strongest argument against this MLB strikeout prop is Cease’s previous workload.
He threw a career-high 120 pitches while recording 12 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout during his last start. That performance demonstrates his ceiling, but it also creates a legitimate concern about how aggressively Toronto will use him tonight.
The clearest losing scenario is straightforward:
St. Louis extends several early plate appearances, Cease’s pitch count climbs following the 120-pitch outing, and Toronto removes him after five or six innings with six or seven strikeouts.
That is realistic enough to prevent an elite rating. However, Cease has received additional rest, and there has been no confirmed report of a strict pitch limit.
His recent strikeout production remains strong enough to support a smaller official wager at the correct price.
Additional MLB Betting Leans Today 7/31
The following betting angles survived the initial board scan but did not qualify as official Pappy’s PlayBook picks.
They should be treated strictly as LEANS ONLY! These are NOT official picks
Lean: Shane Drohan Over 5.5 Strikeouts
Shane Drohan has an appealing strikeout matchup against the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels have carried one of baseball’s highest strikeout rates against left-handed pitching, and their projected lineup contains several right-handed hitters with considerable swing-and-miss risk.
Drohan’s last five strikeout totals are:
7, 2, 6, 9 and 6
He has cleared 5.5 strikeouts in four of those five starts. Milwaukee also rearranged its rotation to give him additional rest before tonight’s appearance.
The matchup works. The price does not.
At -160, bettors must risk $160 to win $100 on a prop that has recently cleared the number by exactly one strikeout twice. Milwaukee has also been monitoring Drohan’s season-long workload.
At -160, this is not an official bet. The prop was attractive closer to -135, but the market has removed the value.
A winning opinion on the matchup does not automatically make the current price worth betting.
Lean: Milwaukee Brewers Team Total Over 4.5 Runs
The Brewers draw a favorable matchup against Angels starter Ryan Johnson.
Johnson has struggled with traffic, efficiency and run prevention this season. Milwaukee also has several ways to create offense, including contact, walks, speed and pressure on the bases.
That variety is important. A team-total over becomes more reliable when an offense does not need to depend entirely on home runs.
The Angels also traded one of their more reliable relief options, creating a secondary scoring route if Johnson fails to work deep into the game.
There are still legitimate concerns. Johnson had shown improved form before his most recent poor appearance, and the Angels’ remaining relievers enter tonight with rest. Milwaukee must also convert baserunners into runs rather than merely creating traffic.
This is an interesting offensive angle, but not an official pick.
Lean: Milwaukee Brewers -1.5
Milwaukee possesses the stronger offensive matchup and should have opportunities to create separation against Johnson and the Angels’ pitching staff.
The run line also offers a better price than an expensive Brewers moneyline. The tradeoff is added variance.
Milwaukee could control most of the game and still win by exactly one run. A run-line bettor needs the Brewers to win and create enough margin to cover the additional 1.5-run requirement.
This is a reasonable plus-money option for bettors already interested in backing Milwaukee, but it is not strong enough to become an official selection.
Lean: Paul Skenes Over 7.5 Strikeouts
Paul Skenes has excellent career numbers against Cincinnati and has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to miss bats in this matchup.
His recent strikeout totals, however, are less consistent:
5, 4, 7, 8 and 11
Skenes has cleared 7.5 strikeouts in only two of those five starts.
The ceiling is unquestionably present, and his history against the Reds is impressive. However, an eight-strikeout requirement leaves limited room for an outing featuring efficient contact outs or an exit after six innings.
The opponent history supports the angle, but the recent hit rate and margin prevent it from becoming one of today’s official MLB betting picks.
Why There Is No 10-Star MLB Pick Today
Not every MLB schedule produces an elite betting opportunity.
A 10-Star release should have a playable price, confirmed inputs, a clear matchup advantage, multiple winning paths and no more than one minor concern. Tonight’s leading candidates do not meet that standard.
Cease has outstanding strikeout form, but his previous 120-pitch workload creates a credible concern.
Drohan has the most favorable opponent strikeout matchup, but his price has climbed to an unacceptable -160.
Milwaukee’s team total has a legitimate scoring path, but it still requires the Brewers to convert opportunities against a rested bullpen.
Skenes owns a high ceiling and excellent matchup history, but his recent strikeout results have lacked consistency.
Forcing one of these bets into a higher rating would weaken the grading system. The goal is not to release the biggest possible play every night. It is to identify the best available wager while protecting the bankroll from bad prices and fragile betting angles.
Today’s Official MLB Pick: Dylan Cease Over 7.5 Strikeouts (5*) Cease Over 7.5 Strikeouts
Play at: -130 or better

Do not play: Over 8.5
MLB Leans
Shane Drohan Over 5.5 strikeouts — matchup lean only; pass at -160
Milwaukee Brewers Team Total Over 4.5 — lean at -145 or better
Milwaukee Brewers -1.5 — plus-money lean
Paul Skenes Over 7.5 strikeouts — strikeout-prop lean
Always verify the current number before placing a wager. MLB lines and player-prop prices can move quickly, and no selection should be chased once the value disappears.
Bet responsibly. Leans are not official Pappy’s PlayBook selections.
