Last night’s 20* MLB pick came through as I backed the LA Dodgers OVER 4.5 total runs. Unlike the Braves the night before, the Dodgers ended the game with 9 total runs. I have another pick for today and decided to give it out for free! This pick could easily be another 20* but I am keeping it safe and not betting this one based on emotion. If you do not understand what I mean when I say Betting with Emotion, be sure to check out this article here.

After completing a full-market audit of Thursday’s MLB schedule, one pitching prop separated itself from the rest of the board.

Troy Melton Over 5.5 Strikeouts

Rating: To win $1,000
Best available price: -135
Playable to: -145
Pass at: -146 or worse
Automatic pass: The strikeout line moves to 6.5

The number is the key. We are betting Melton to record at least six strikeouts, but I would not chase this wager if the sportsbook raises the requirement to seven.

Why Troy Melton’s Strikeout Arsenal Is Improving

This is not simply a bet based on Melton’s recent box scores. His underlying pitch data supports the improvement we are seeing on the mound.

Melton has recorded 25 strikeouts over 17⅓ innings during July. His expanded arsenal has also given him multiple ways to finish hitters once he gets ahead in the count.

According to Baseball Savant, Melton is using six different pitches this season:

  • Four-seam fastball: 37.4%
  • Cutter: 20.5%
  • Slider: 18.0%
  • Sinker: 9.6%
  • Splitter: 9.1%
  • Curveball: 5.4%

The cutter has become an especially important weapon. Opposing hitters have produced just a .083 batting average and .111 slugging percentage against the pitch, while it has generated a 26% whiff rate.

His slider provides an even stronger swing-and-miss option. The pitch owns a 32.5% whiff rate and has produced a strikeout in 35.6% of the plate appearances ending with the slider.

That combination matters against a lineup that will be forced to protect against velocity while also identifying several different secondary pitches.

Melton Is Entering in Excellent Form

Melton’s recent performances show that his strikeout production is not coming from one isolated start.

Earlier this month, he generated a career-high nine strikeouts against Oakland. At that point, he had allowed only two earned runs over his previous 23⅔ innings while striking out 27 batters.

He enters this matchup with the ability to clear 5.5 strikeouts without needing an unusually long outing. Melton can reach six strikeouts in five or six innings if his command is reasonably efficient.

That is an important distinction. This wager does not require a complete game, seven innings or a career performance. It requires six strikeouts from a pitcher who has recently been missing bats at a much higher level.

Kansas City Is Missing Its Most Dangerous Hitter

The Royals will be without Bobby Witt Jr., who was placed on the 10-day injured list because of lower-back tightness.

Witt was hitting .289 with 13 home runs and a league-leading 30 stolen bases. Removing that caliber of hitter from the lineup significantly changes the difficulty of the assignment for Melton.

Witt is not merely Kansas City’s most productive hitter. He is also the player most capable of punishing a mistake early in the count and forcing a pitcher to change his approach.

Without Witt, the Royals’ projected lineup becomes less intimidating and gives Melton more freedom to attack hitters aggressively.

Kansas City still has professional hitters capable of extending at-bats, so this is not a matchup we should treat as automatic. However, the weakened lineup improves Melton’s chances of remaining in control and working deep enough to reach the required six strikeouts.

What Could Go Wrong?

Every wager has a losing path, including a highly rated one.

The primary concern is Melton’s efficiency. If he falls behind hitters, issues multiple walks or runs up a high pitch count, Detroit could remove him before he receives enough opportunities to record six strikeouts.

Kansas City also does not possess one of baseball’s highest overall strikeout rates against right-handed pitching. This is why the wager becomes much less attractive if the prop moves from 5.5 to 6.5.

At 5.5, we need six strikeouts. At 6.5, we would need seven, eliminating much of the value created by the current number.

The handicap is strong, but price discipline remains mandatory.

Final Analysis

Melton is missing bats, his cutter has developed into a legitimate weapon, his slider is generating an elite whiff rate and he has recorded 25 strikeouts in only 17⅓ July innings.

He now faces a Kansas City lineup missing Bobby Witt Jr., its most dangerous and complete offensive player.

My projection places Melton above the posted strikeout total often enough to justify a 10-Star rating at the current price.
