Free MLB Pick Today: Astros Team Total Over 4.5

Yesterday’s 20* Miami Marlins moneyline pick* cashed with a 2-0 shutout over the New York Mets.

Sandy Alcantara delivered six-plus scoreless innings, Miami’s bullpen protected the lead, and the Marlins completed the win without ever trailing. (MLB.com)

Today’s Free MLB Pick 8/3

The Astros enter tonight with one of baseball’s hottest offenses, and they draw a matchup against Shane Bieber that Houston has already exploited this season.

Bieber’s Numbers Create Several Scoring Paths

Bieber enters with a 5.74 ERA through his first six starts of the season. His Statcast profile is even more concerning, including a .406 expected wOBA, a 45.5% hard-hit rate, a 15.6% strikeout rate and a 12.8% walk rate. (MLB.com)

That combination creates two clear paths for Houston.

If Bieber struggles with command, the Astros can create traffic through walks and extended innings. If he attacks the strike zone, his elevated hard-contact numbers give Houston’s lineup opportunities to do damage.

Bieber is also coming off an outing in which he walked six hitters while recording only two outs. Toronto’s own game preview identifies his ability to rebound from that performance as the central question entering tonight.

Houston Has Already Hurt Bieber

This is not a blind fade based on one bad start.

When Bieber faced Houston on June 23, the Astros hit three consecutive home runs against him and scored four runs before he completed four innings. Houston eventually won that game 9-7.

The Astros have already seen his current arsenal, and their aggressive approach produced immediate damage.

The Astros Are Surging

Houston enters tonight on a six-game winning streak and has won 11 of its last 12 games. The Astros scored 23 runs while sweeping Texas over the weekend, with production coming from both the top and lower portions of the lineup. (Houston Chronicle)

That lineup depth matters for a team-total wager. Houston does not need every run to come from Yordan Alvarez or Jeremy Peña. The Astros have enough support throughout the order to continue applying pressure after Bieber leaves the game.

What About a Bieber Bounce-Back?

Bieber has responded to poor outings before, so a better performance tonight is possible.

However, even a respectable rebound does not automatically kill this bet. Houston can score two or three runs against Bieber and still reach five against Toronto’s bullpen.

The team total also keeps the wager focused entirely on Houston’s offense. We do not need Cristian Javier or the Astros’ bullpen to shut down Toronto. We only need Houston to score five runs.
