The Carolina Panthers enter the 2026 NFL season as defending NFC South champions with a developing quarterback, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year and more preseason adversity than an 8-9 team can comfortably absorb.

Carolina ended an eight-year playoff drought in 2025 and pushed the Los Angeles Rams to the final minute of a 34-31 Wild Card loss. Bryce Young set career highs, Tetairoa McMillan became a 1,000-yard receiver immediately and the defense created enough turnovers to compensate for a weak pass rush.

The Panthers’ next step will not be easy.

Both starting tackles face major health questions, Nic Scourton tore his ACL on the first day of training camp and a difficult non-division schedule leaves little margin for an extended adjustment period.

This Carolina Panthers 2026 season preview covers the roster, coaching styles, schedule, betting odds, fantasy targets, win total and final record prediction.

Carolina is better than the rebuilding label that followed it into the past two seasons. Defending the division requires Young to become more efficient while the roster survives significant losses at premium positions.

What Happened to the Panthers in 2025?

Carolina finished 8-9 and won the NFC South through a three-team tiebreaker after Atlanta defeated New Orleans in Week 18.

The Panthers did not back into every part of their progress.

Young threw for 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 63.6% of his passes. He added 216 rushing yards and two scores and developed a reputation for performing his best late in close games.

His efficiency metrics remained below the league’s best quarterbacks, but the offense finally had a clear structure and a true No. 1 receiver.

McMillan caught passes for 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Jalen Coker emerged as the second receiver late in the season and then produced nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown in the playoff loss.

Carolina’s running game used Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle. Dowdle reached 1,000 rushing yards before leaving for Pittsburgh in free agency.

The defense’s profile was uneven. Carolina recorded only 30 sacks, tied near the bottom of the league, but its secondary created turnovers. Horn and Mike Jackson combined for nine interceptions.

The playoff performance showed both the ceiling and the limitations. Carolina scored 31 points against an NFC contender but allowed the deciding touchdown in the final minute.

The official Panthers statistics provide the complete 2025 production and illustrate how much the defense depended on its secondary.

Major Carolina Panthers Offseason Changes

General manager Dan Morgan attacked pass rush, linebacker, offensive line and quarterback depth.

Important Additions

  • EDGE Jaelan Phillips
  • LB Devin Lloyd
  • QB Kenny Pickett
  • C Luke Fortner
  • OT Rasheed Walker
  • OT Stone Forsythe
  • WR John Metchie III
  • RB AJ Dillon
  • S Nick Scott
  • S Isaiah Simmons
  • CB Akayleb Evans
  • DT Lee Hunter
  • OT Monroe Freeling

Important Departures

  • RB Rico Dowdle
  • QB Andy Dalton
  • C Cade Mays
  • C Austin Corbett
  • DT A’Shawn Robinson
  • EDGE D.J. Wonnum
  • Multiple reserve defensive linemen and special-team contributors

Phillips signed a four-year contract to become the leading edge defender. His explosiveness gives Evero a true pressure threat, but his own injury history makes the loss of Scourton more damaging.

Lloyd arrives after recording five interceptions for Jacksonville. He adds length and coverage ability next to Trevin Wallace and should help defend the middle of the field.

Fortner becomes the new center. Walker was signed as experienced tackle insurance before Carolina knew Taylor Moton would miss regular-season time because of treatment for a blood clot in his lung.

The official Panthers free-agency tracker provides the complete transaction history.

Carolina Panthers 2026 Draft Class

Carolina used its first two selections on the lines and its third on a large, fast receiver.

  • OT Monroe Freeling, No. 19 overall
  • DT Lee Hunter, No. 49 overall
  • WR Chris Brazzell II, No. 83 overall
  • CB Will Lee III, No. 129 overall
  • C Sam Hecht, No. 144 overall
  • S Zakee Wheatley, No. 151 overall
  • LB Jackson Kuwatch, No. 227 overall

Freeling is a 6-foot-7 tackle with athletic movement skills and long-term left-tackle potential. He was initially expected to develop behind Walker while Ikem Ekwonu recovered. Moton’s condition may force Freeling into meaningful action sooner.

Hunter adds a powerful 318-pound interior defender next to Derrick Brown. Carolina needs him to absorb blocks, improve the early-down run defense and create cleaner rush lanes for Phillips.

Brazzell is the class’s most interesting fantasy player. He combines 6-foot-4 size with 4.37 speed and caught 62 passes for 1,017 yards and nine touchdowns at Tennessee in 2025. His vertical ability can punish defenses that rotate coverage toward McMillan.

Lee and Wheatley strengthen a secondary that already represents the defense’s best unit. Hecht gives Carolina a developmental center behind Fortner.

The complete class is available through the official Panthers draft page.

Dave Canales’ Coaching Style

Canales has built Carolina around development, physical offense and confidence in the quarterback.

His offensive principles include:

  • Establishing the running game
  • Play action from under-center looks
  • Moving pockets and defined reads
  • Shot plays created by protection and formation
  • Quick throws that help the quarterback establish rhythm
  • Receiver alignments designed to create clean releases
  • Aggressive late-game trust in Young
  • A balanced personnel approach rather than constant spread formations

The most important 2026 change is that Canales will no longer call every offensive play.

Brad Idzik takes over play-calling duties, allowing Canales to manage defense, special teams and game situations more directly. Idzik has worked with Canales in Seattle, Tampa Bay and Carolina, so the terminology and core system should remain familiar.

That continuity lowers installation risk. It does not eliminate play-caller risk.

Idzik must demonstrate that he can maintain Canales’ quarterback-friendly sequencing while improving early-down efficiency. Carolina cannot depend on Young rescuing the offense late every week.

Brad Idzik’s Offensive System

Idzik is expected to preserve the same broad structure while adding his own sequencing.

The offense should continue using:

  • Inside and outside zone
  • Gap runs behind a powerful interior line
  • Play action
  • Bootlegs
  • Quick-game concepts
  • Condensed formations
  • Vertical routes for McMillan and Brazzell
  • Intermediate crossers for Coker
  • Running back checkdowns when pressure arrives

The tackle injuries may force an early adjustment toward quicker throws and additional tight-end protection.

That can improve Young’s completion percentage while reducing his average depth of target. Bettors should not assume the same passing-yard projection applies if Carolina consistently protects its tackles with conservative concepts.

Bryce Young’s 2026 Fantasy and Betting Outlook

Young enters the final season of his rookie contract with the strongest supporting cast and greatest expectations of his career.

His 23 touchdown passes were a career high. His late-game confidence is real, and his 448-yard performance against Atlanta demonstrated a ceiling that was absent during his first two seasons.

The next step is efficiency outside of obvious comeback situations.

Reasons for Optimism

  • Third season in the same offensive structure
  • McMillan is an established No. 1 receiver
  • Coker emerged late in 2025
  • Brazzell adds vertical speed and size
  • Hubbard provides run-game stability
  • Hunt and Lewis form a strong guard combination
  • Idzik already understands Young’s strengths
  • Young has improved in pressure moments

Reasons for Concern

  • Both starting tackles may be unavailable early
  • Ekwonu has no firm return date
  • Moton will miss regular-season time
  • Young’s EPA and QBR remained near the bottom of the league
  • The schedule includes multiple elite pass rushes
  • A new play caller introduces uncertainty
  • Career passing volume remains modest

Betting outlook: Young’s completion markets may be more attractive than passing-yard Overs while the tackles are compromised. Passing Overs become more appealing when Ekwonu or Moton returns and the matchup permits deeper concepts.

Fantasy outlook: Young is a matchup-based QB2 rather than a locked weekly starter. His path to a top-15 finish requires more rushing production or another meaningful touchdown increase.

Tetairoa McMillan’s 2026 Fantasy Outlook

McMillan immediately became Carolina’s offensive centerpiece.

He produced 1,014 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie despite playing in an offense that did not rank among the league leaders in passing volume.

His size, catch radius and body control give Young a dependable target when the coverage is tight. McMillan can win outside, work intermediate in-breaking routes and become a red-zone mismatch.

The market has set his receiving total near 925.5 yards, below his rookie production. That reduction reflects schedule difficulty and offensive-line concerns more than a diminished role.

Fantasy position: McMillan is a strong WR2 with WR1 upside.

Betting variable: His reception markets may be safer than yardage when Carolina uses a quick passing plan.

Primary risk: Defensive attention increases now that opponents have a full season of NFL film.

Jalen Coker, Chris Brazzell II and Xavier Legette

Coker enters camp as the leading second receiver. He closed 2025 with 19 catches for 244 yards and three touchdowns over the final five regular-season games, then delivered the best playoff game of his career.

His route pacing and chemistry with Young make him more dependable than his draft status suggests.

Brazzell provides a different skill set. His size-speed combination can stretch coverage vertically and create isolated opportunities opposite McMillan.

Legette enters a prove-it season. The former first-round pick has flashed power and athleticism but has not established consistent production. John Metchie III, Jimmy Horn Jr. and David Moore add competition.

Safest secondary receiver: Coker
Best rookie sleeper: Brazzell
Best-ball target: Brazzell because of vertical touchdown upside
Player under the most pressure: Legette

Chuba Hubbard and the Panthers Backfield

Hubbard returns to the lead role after splitting work with Dowdle.

Trevor Etienne is the leading change-of-pace option. Jonathon Brooks is attempting to return after an ACL injury delayed the beginning of his career, while AJ Dillon offers short-yardage power if he makes the final roster.

Hubbard’s value comes from dependable volume rather than elite explosiveness. The tackle situation creates risk for perimeter runs, but Hunt and Damien Lewis give Carolina a powerful interior foundation.

Fantasy position: Hubbard is an RB2/RB3 whose value improves in non-PPR formats.

Best handcuff: Etienne early in the season; Brooks has the higher long-term ceiling if fully healthy.

Betting variable: Hubbard carry Overs are most attractive when Carolina is favored and the tackle combination is stable.

Panthers Tight Ends

Ja’Tavion Sanders led the tight-end room with 29 catches before suffering a broken ankle late in the season. He has participated in offseason work and remains the most interesting receiving option at the position.

Tommy Tremble provides blocking and red-zone utility. Mitchell Evans and James Mitchell add competition, while Feleipe Franks offers unusual special-teams and trick-play versatility.

The group caught 78 passes for 638 yards and five touchdowns in 2025. Those targets may remain distributed rather than producing one dependable weekly fantasy starter.

Fantasy position: Sanders is a late-round TE2 only after his health is confirmed.

Carolina Panthers Offensive-Line Analysis

The preferred line would include:

  • LT Ikem Ekwonu
  • LG Damien Lewis
  • C Luke Fortner
  • RG Robert Hunt
  • RT Taylor Moton

Carolina may not field that group for months.

Ekwonu is recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon suffered in the playoff loss and does not have a firm return date. Moton was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung and will miss regular-season time while receiving treatment.

Walker and Freeling are the leading replacement tackles. Stone Forsythe provides additional experience.

The interior should remain strong if Hunt and Lewis stay healthy. Fortner’s communication with Young and the guards must develop quickly after Cade Mays and Austin Corbett departed.

Betting variable: Downgrade Young’s deep passing, Carolina’s explosive-play rate and Hubbard’s outside efficiency until the tackle combination proves functional.

Ejiro Evero’s Defensive System

Evero uses a flexible 3-4 structure built around disguise and simulated pressure.

His defenses commonly feature:

  • Odd fronts
  • Five-man surfaces
  • Safeties rotating after the snap
  • Zone coverage with pattern-matching principles
  • Pressure from linebackers and defensive backs
  • Four-man rushes that disguise the identity of the rushers
  • Interior movement intended to create one-on-one matchups

The system works best when the front can create pressure without exposing the secondary.

Carolina could not do that consistently in 2025. The Panthers finished with 30 sacks, and the free-agent investment in Phillips was designed to fix the problem.

Scourton’s torn ACL removes the second edge rusher and places more attention on Phillips.

Panthers Front Seven

Derrick Brown remains the defense’s anchor. He controls blockers, disrupts the run and creates opportunities for the linebackers.

Hunter, Tershawn Wharton, Bobby Brown III, LaBryan Ray and Cam Jackson provide the interior rotation. Wharton’s recovery from neck surgery requires monitoring.

Phillips is the primary edge defender. Patrick Jones II, Trevis Gipson, Princely Umanmielen, Isaiah Simmons and younger options must replace Scourton’s workload.

Lloyd and Wallace give Carolina a more athletic inside-linebacker combination. Lloyd’s coverage production may allow Evero to disguise pressures without sacrificing the middle of the field.

Early betting angle: Opposing quarterback passing Overs remain relevant if Carolina cannot create pressure with four rushers. Mobile quarterbacks may be particularly dangerous if the replacement edges fail to maintain discipline.

Panthers Secondary Outlook

The secondary is the defense’s greatest strength.

Horn and Jackson combined for nine interceptions in 2025. Horn began camp on the non-football injury list after a foot cut required stitches, but the team expected a short absence.

Rookie Will Lee, Akayleb Evans, Chau Smith-Wade and Corey Thornton provide depth at corner.

Tre’von Moehrig and Nick Scott lead the safety group. Lathan Ransom, Wheatley and Simmons create flexibility in nickel and matchup packages.

The unit can generate turnovers, but interception totals fluctuate. Carolina should not project another strong takeaway season without also improving pressure.

Carolina Panthers 2026 Schedule

Carolina receives an early bye and a difficult collection of non-division opponents.

The Week 5 bye comes early enough to help Ekwonu’s rehabilitation but leaves Carolina without a late-season recovery period.

The stretch from Week 6 through Week 13 includes Philadelphia, Green Bay, Denver, Baltimore, Tampa Bay and Minnesota. Four of those games are on the road.

Schedule adjustments include:

  • Two road games before the Week 4 prime-time matchup
  • A Week 5 bye
  • Philadelphia immediately after the bye
  • A short week before traveling to Green Bay
  • Baltimore followed by consecutive road games
  • Two cold-weather road games in the final six weeks

Over 7.5Approximately +110 to +115
Under 7.5Approximately -130 to -136
Make playoffsApproximately +220 to +240

The Over carries plus money because the market is pricing Carolina’s schedule and injuries more heavily than its division title.

Current movement can be reviewed through the CBS Sports Panthers betting preview.

Panthers Win-Total Analysis

Carolina has a realistic route to eight wins. The current roster also has little protection against another premium-position injury.

Reasons to Consider Over 7.5

  • Young improved in 2025
  • McMillan is a legitimate No. 1 receiver
  • Coker emerged late in the season
  • Brazzell adds vertical upside
  • Hubbard has a clear path to lead-back volume
  • Hunt and Lewis form a strong guard combination
  • Phillips upgrades the edge rush
  • Lloyd improves linebacker coverage
  • The secondary remains talented
  • Carolina won the division last season
  • Three of the final four games are at home

Reasons to Consider Under 7.5

  • Young’s efficiency metrics remained poor
  • Idzik is a first-time NFL play caller
  • Ekwonu may miss substantial time
  • Moton will miss regular-season games
  • The center position changed
  • Scourton is out for the season
  • Phillips has a significant injury history
  • The defense produced only 30 sacks in 2025
  • The Week 5 bye creates a long closing stretch
  • The non-division schedule is difficult
  • Eight wins are required to cash the Over

Pappy’s PlayBook Preseason Position

Pass at the current price, with a slight Over lean.

The early projection is 8-9, placing Carolina only half a game above the total.

Plus money helps, but the tackle and edge injuries prevent the projection from creating a strong enough edge.

Price to consider Over 7.5: +125 or better
Price to consider Over 7: -120 or better
Price to consider Under 8.5: -115 or better
Automatic pass: Additional injury to Young, McMillan, Brown, Phillips, Hunt or Horn

The Over becomes more attractive if Walker and Freeling handle the tackle positions effectively during the preseason.

NFC South and Super Bowl Outlook

Carolina is the defending champion but is not the division favorite.

That creates an appealing headline and only a modest betting case. Tampa Bay has a more established quarterback, New Orleans improved with Tyler Shough and Atlanta owns more top-end offensive talent.

The Panthers’ continuity and secondary keep them competitive. Their line injuries and schedule limit the margin for error.

Division price to monitor: +400 or better
Make-playoffs price to monitor: +275 or better
NFC price to monitor: +6000 or better
Super Bowl price to monitor: +12000 or better
Current recommendation: Pass

Weekly Panthers Betting Angles to Monitor

Confirm the Starting Tackles

The names matter less than the performance. Track pressure allowed, penalties and help required from tight ends or running backs.

Evaluate Idzik’s Opening Scripts

Carolina’s late-game offense improved before its early-down efficiency. First-half team totals become more attractive if Idzik creates easier completions immediately.

Separate Young’s Completion and Yardage Markets

Quick throws can support completion Overs while damaging passing-yard and longest-completion projections.

Track McMillan’s Coverage

Opponents will devote more safety attention to him. Coker and Brazzell become attractive secondary options when defenses consistently bracket McMillan.

Test the Pass Rush

Phillips must produce pressure without constant blitz help. If he is regularly doubled and no secondary rusher emerges, opposing passing markets deserve upgrades.

Watch the Early Bye Effect

The Week 5 bye helps immediate injuries but provides no late-season rest. Carolina’s injury and fatigue adjustments should increase after Week 12.

Respect the Secondary

Horn and Jackson can punish inaccurate quarterbacks. Carolina’s defense is more attractive against mistake-prone passers than against efficient offenses with strong protection.

Carolina Panthers Fantasy Football Targets

Best Overall Target: Tetairoa McMillan

McMillan has the clearest combination of talent, role and volume. He should be drafted as a strong WR2 with top-10 positional upside.

Best Value: Jalen Coker

Coker’s late-season and playoff production established him as more than a temporary starter. He can outperform a modest draft price if he remains Young’s second target.

Best Running Back Target: Chuba Hubbard

Hubbard owns the clearest early-season workload. His ceiling depends on the offensive line and touchdown opportunities.

Best Rookie Sleeper: Chris Brazzell II

Brazzell’s size and speed create immediate big-play potential. He is especially attractive in best ball and dynasty formats.

Best Deep Sleeper: Jonathon Brooks

Brooks has the talent to become Carolina’s most explosive back. His injury history and uncertain early role make him a late selection, not a dependable Week 1 starter.

Player to Draft Carefully: Bryce Young

Young’s real-life improvement does not guarantee high-end fantasy output. He remains a QB2 until his efficiency or rushing volume increases.

Panthers Defense and Kicker

Carolina’s defense offers matchup-based fantasy value through interceptions. The unit should not be treated as a weekly starter until the pass rush proves it can survive Scourton’s absence.

The kicker can provide streaming value when Carolina is at home and the offense is healthy.

Best-Case Scenario

Young makes another efficiency jump under Idzik and McMillan becomes one of the NFC’s best receivers.

Walker and Freeling protect well enough for Carolina to use its entire offense, while Hubbard benefits from a healthy interior line.

Phillips remains healthy, Hunter strengthens the defensive front and Horn leads another productive secondary.

In that scenario, Carolina can win nine or 10 games and repeat as NFC South champion.

Worst-Case Scenario

The tackle injuries create constant pressure, forcing Young into conservative decisions and disrupting the running game.

Idzik struggles as a first-time play caller, and the offense again depends on late comebacks.

Phillips receives no help after Scourton’s injury, allowing opponents to control games against a low-pressure defense.

In that scenario, Carolina could finish 5-12 or 6-11.

Final Carolina Panthers 2026 Prediction

The Panthers have established a real foundation.

Young is improving, McMillan is already a high-level receiver and the secondary gives Carolina a path to win close games. Canales has also created more stability than the franchise had during the years preceding his arrival.

The 2026 roster is not entering under normal conditions.

Carolina may begin without both preferred tackles, has already lost Scourton and must navigate a schedule filled with playoff-level opponents. An early bye helps the immediate medical situation but creates a long final three months.

Projected record: 8-9

Projected finish: Second in the NFC South

Playoff outlook: Competing for the division into December

Current futures recommendation: Pass

Early win-total lean: Over 7.5 only at +125 or better

Carolina can repeat as division champion without becoming a high-win team. At +110 or +115, the Over is interesting but does not fully compensate bettors for the tackle, edge and schedule risk.

Carolina Panthers 2026 FAQ

What is the Panthers’ 2026 win total?

Carolina’s current regular-season win total is 7.5 games. The Over is generally available at plus money, while the Under is favored.

Who is Carolina’s offensive play caller?

Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik will call plays in 2026 after Dave Canales handled that responsibility during his first two seasons as head coach.

Is Bryce Young a good fantasy quarterback?

Young is a matchup-based QB2. He has improved as an NFL starter, but his passing volume, efficiency and rushing production do not yet support a dependable weekly QB1 projection.

Is Tetairoa McMillan a fantasy WR1?

He has WR1 upside and should be drafted as a strong WR2. His 1,014-yard rookie season established a high floor, although the offensive-line injuries create some early risk.

Who is Carolina’s starting running back?

Chuba Hubbard enters the season as the clear lead back. Trevor Etienne, Jonathon Brooks and AJ Dillon are competing for complementary roles.

When will Taylor Moton return?

Moton is expected to miss regular-season time while being treated for a blood clot in his lung. Carolina has not announced a firm return date.

Who replaces Nic Scourton?

No single player is expected to replace him. Jaelan Phillips becomes the primary rusher, with Patrick Jones II, Trevis Gipson, Princely Umanmielen and other rotational defenders receiving opportunities.

Who is the best Panthers fantasy sleeper?

Chris Brazzell II is the best rookie sleeper because of his 6-foot-4 frame and 4.37 speed. Coker is the safer late-round value.

Should bettors take Over 7.5 wins?

The Over is worth considering at +125 or better after the tackle combination proves functional. At +110 or +115, the current 8-9 projection does not create enough separation.
