The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter the 2026 NFL season as the NFC South betting favorite without the two players who defined the franchise for more than a decade.

Mike Evans signed with San Francisco. Lavonte David retired. Tampa Bay also changed offensive coordinators for the fifth consecutive season after an 8-9 finish ended its run of five straight playoff appearances.

The roster is not empty.

Baker Mayfield remains a proven starting quarterback, Emeka Egbuka is ready to become the leading receiver, Bucky Irving is healthy again and first-round edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. has been one of the strongest performers in training camp.

The uncertainty is unusually concentrated. Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract after extension talks stalled, Vita Vea is holding in while dealing with a back injury and Tristan Wirfs has missed much of camp with a hamstring issue.

This Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2026 season preview covers the roster, coaching styles, schedule, betting odds, fantasy targets, win total and final record prediction.

Tampa Bay has the highest floor in the division because it has the most established quarterback. It does not have enough separation from 8.5 to make Over +110 an automatic wager.

What Happened to the Buccaneers in 2025?

Tampa Bay began the season 6-2 and appeared positioned to win a fifth consecutive NFC South title.

The Buccaneers finished 2-7.

The late collapse included injuries throughout the offense, inconsistent protection and repeated defensive failures in high-leverage situations. Tampa Bay finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Mayfield played through knee and arm injuries. He completed 63.2% of his passes for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, his lowest yardage and touchdown totals since joining Tampa Bay.

Egbuka became the leading receiver as a rookie with 938 yards. Evans appeared in only eight games and finished with 368 yards and three touchdowns, ending his streak of 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

Irving’s second year was disrupted by foot and shoulder injuries. He missed seven games, rushed for 588 yards and averaged only 3.4 yards per carry after producing 1,122 yards and 5.4 per carry as a rookie.

The defense lost Calijah Kancey to a torn pectoral muscle in September and never found a consistent edge rusher. David remained productive with 114 tackles, but the unit struggled to finish drives and protect leads.

The official Buccaneers statistics show the offensive decline: Tampa Bay fell to 22.4 points and 302.4 yards per game after ranking among the league’s most productive offenses in 2024.

Major Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offseason Changes

General manager Jason Licht attempted to replace leadership and defensive speed while preserving the offense’s young core.

Important Additions

  • OC Zac Robinson
  • LB Alex Anzalone
  • LB Christian Rozeboom
  • OLB Al-Quadin Muhammad
  • DT A’Shawn Robinson
  • RB Kenneth Gainwell
  • OLB Rueben Bain Jr.
  • LB Josiah Trotter
  • WR Ted Hurst III

Important Departures

  • WR Mike Evans
  • LB Lavonte David, retired
  • RB Rachaad White
  • CB Jamel Dean
  • OLB Haason Reddick
  • OC Josh Grizzard
  • Several assistant coaches and defensive reserves

Anzalone becomes the leading veteran linebacker after David’s retirement. He brings range, communication and experience from Detroit, but replacing David’s instincts and leadership requires more than one transaction.

Gainwell adds receiving and pass-protection ability behind Irving. A’Shawn Robinson strengthens the run defense and can play beside Vea or provide essential snaps if the hold-in continues.

Evans is the irreplaceable departure. Tampa Bay can distribute his targets among Egbuka, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and Hurst, but it cannot assume one player will immediately reproduce his size, red-zone value and coverage influence.

The official Buccaneers free-agency tracker provides the complete transaction history.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2026 Draft Class

Tampa Bay used five of seven selections on defense.

  • OLB Rueben Bain Jr., No. 15 overall
  • LB Josiah Trotter, No. 46 overall
  • WR Ted Hurst III, No. 84 overall
  • DB Keionte Scott, fourth round
  • DT DeMonte Capehart, fifth round
  • G Billy Schrauth, sixth round
  • TE Bauer Sharp, seventh round

Bain supplies power, strong hands and the ability to rush from multiple alignments. His early camp production against starting tackle Luke Goedeke has created immediate expectations.

Trotter adds physicality and pressure ability inside. He can develop behind Anzalone while contributing in sub-packages and on special teams.

Hurst is a 6-foot-3 vertical receiver with the size Tampa Bay otherwise lost when Evans departed. He has already earned Mayfield’s trust during practices affected by injuries to Egbuka, Godwin and McMillan.

Scott can compete at nickel or outside corner. Capehart adds size to the defensive line, Schrauth provides developmental guard depth and Sharp strengthens a tight-end room led by Cade Otton.

The official Buccaneers draft coverage provides team scouting reports and video for the complete class.

Todd Bowles’ Coaching Style

Bowles enters his fifth season as Tampa Bay’s head coach.

His defensive identity includes:

  • Aggressive pressure packages
  • Simulated pressure
  • Defensive-back blitzes
  • Multiple fronts
  • Heavy use of safeties as movable pieces
  • Interior run-defense emphasis
  • Disguised coverage
  • Willingness to challenge protection rules on third down

Bowles’ best defenses create confusion without sacrificing run integrity. Vea occupies multiple blockers, allowing linebackers and safeties to attack clean lanes.

The weakness appeared in long-yardage situations last season. Tampa Bay too often created pressure without finishing the play or allowed quarterbacks to identify the open space behind it.

Bowles changed several defensive assistant positions after the collapse. The pressure design will remain aggressive, but the coverage communication and tackling must improve.

His game-management approach has also drawn scrutiny. A team with a narrow projected margin cannot lose avoidable possessions through clock decisions, conservative fourth downs or preventable special-teams errors.

Zac Robinson’s Offensive System

Robinson is Tampa Bay’s fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons.

He worked under Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams and spent the past two years coordinating Atlanta’s offense. His system is expected to use:

  • Wide-zone and gap-running concepts
  • Play action
  • Condensed formations
  • Pre-snap motion
  • Bootlegs and moving pockets
  • Intermediate crossers
  • Route combinations that create yards after the catch
  • Defined reads for the quarterback
  • More balanced early-down play calling

Robinson briefly coached Mayfield in Los Angeles in 2022. That familiarity reduces the installation risk, and the quarterback’s ability to throw accurately on the move fits the system.

The larger question is sequencing. Tampa Bay’s offense became predictable and inefficient during its 2025 collapse. Robinson must rebuild the running game without reducing the aggressive passing identity that has made Mayfield successful.

Baker Mayfield’s 2026 Fantasy and Betting Outlook

Mayfield enters a contract season after extension talks stopped before training camp.

The disagreement creates a major storyline without automatically creating a football downgrade. Mayfield has practiced fully, and general manager Jason Licht has publicly described him as Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback.

Reasons for Optimism

  • Three seasons of success in Tampa Bay
  • Prior experience with Robinson
  • Egbuka is ready for a larger role
  • Godwin remains an elite slot target when healthy
  • McMillan and Hurst add vertical ability
  • Irving is fully cleared
  • Otton provides dependable middle-of-field production
  • Mayfield can execute bootlegs and movement throws
  • Contract-year motivation

Reasons for Concern

  • Evans no longer controls coverage outside
  • Fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons
  • Wirfs is dealing with a hamstring injury
  • The receiver room has already experienced minor camp injuries
  • Mayfield played through multiple injuries in 2025
  • His completion percentage fell to 63.2%
  • Contract questions can remain a weekly distraction
  • The schedule includes several elite defensive fronts

Betting outlook: Mayfield’s passing markets should be evaluated through protection and receiver availability. His touchdown Overs are most attractive when Tampa Bay has its full red-zone group and Vea’s status does not create a negative game script.

Fantasy outlook: Mayfield is a high-end QB2 with low-end QB1 upside. The loss of Evans lowers the ceiling, but the overall receiving depth keeps him draftable.

Emeka Egbuka’s 2026 Fantasy Outlook

Egbuka produced 938 receiving yards as a rookie and now becomes the leading option.

Robinson can move him between the slot and perimeter, use motion to prevent jams and create intermediate catches with room to run. Egbuka does not need to imitate Evans. His value comes from route intelligence, versatility and reliable separation.

The main concern is target quality against No. 1 coverage. Opponents can now assign their best corner and rotate safety help toward him without worrying about Evans on the opposite side.

Fantasy position: Egbuka is a strong WR2 with WR1 upside if he becomes Mayfield’s clear red-zone preference.

Betting variable: Reception markets may be more stable than yardage early because Robinson can manufacture touches even against difficult coverage.

Primary risk: Lower-body soreness has already caused precautionary missed practice time. Confirm full participation before aggressively playing preseason or early-season Overs.

Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and Ted Hurst III

Godwin remains one of the league’s most dependable slot receivers when healthy. Veteran rest has limited portions of his camp workload, but his route role should remain central to the offense.

McMillan provides outside speed and demonstrated strong chemistry with Mayfield during the 2024 stretch run. His 2025 development was interrupted by the same offensive instability that affected the entire roster.

Hurst is the rookie with the clearest path to an Evans-like alignment. His size and vertical acceleration can earn perimeter snaps even if his total target volume remains modest.

Safest secondary receiver: Godwin
Best late-round target: McMillan
Best-ball sleeper: Hurst
Player to monitor during preseason: Tez Johnson after a groin strain

The group is deep enough to support Mayfield. Its distribution may make weekly fantasy forecasting difficult after Egbuka.

Bucky Irving and the Buccaneers Backfield

Irving is fully cleared after shoulder surgery and has opened camp without restrictions.

His rookie season established the ceiling: 1,122 rushing yards, 392 receiving yards and eight rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

His second season established the risk. Foot and shoulder injuries limited him to 10 games, and his average fell to 3.4 yards.

Robinson has emphasized the running game, which should create volume for Irving. Gainwell can handle third downs and protect Irving from an unsustainable workload, while Sean Tucker remains a physical reserve.

Fantasy position: Irving is a high-upside RB2. Drafting him as a guaranteed RB1 ignores the injuries and 2025 efficiency decline.

Best handcuff: Gainwell in PPR formats; Tucker in non-PPR leagues.

Betting variable: Irving carry Overs become more attractive when Tampa Bay is favored and Wirfs is active. Reception markets may be less stable because of Gainwell.

Cade Otton and the Buccaneers Tight Ends

Otton led Tampa Bay’s tight ends and finished with 572 receiving yards in 2025.

He is not an explosive field-stretcher, but he understands spacing, blocks well enough to stay on the field and gives Mayfield a dependable target when pressure forces a quick decision.

Ko Kieft remains the blocking specialist. Bauer Sharp enters as a developmental receiving option, while Devin Culp adds athletic depth.

Fantasy position: Otton is a stable TE2 with matchup-based TE1 weeks.

Betting variable: Otton reception Overs are strongest against defenses that pressure heavily and concede underneath throws.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive-Line Analysis

The expected starting line is:

  • LT Tristan Wirfs
  • LG Ben Bredeson
  • C Graham Barton
  • RG Cody Mauch
  • RT Luke Goedeke

When healthy, the line has a strong young interior and an elite left tackle.

Wirfs changes the entire protection structure. His hamstring injury has kept him out of much of camp, and Tampa Bay should not rush him for preseason work. The important question is whether he can practice fully before Week 1.

Barton is entering a critical third season at center. Mauch continues developing at right guard, while Goedeke must convert strong run blocking into more consistent pass protection.

Betting variable: Downgrade Tampa Bay’s passing efficiency and Irving’s rushing projection if Wirfs is unavailable. The Week 1 trip to Cincinnati becomes substantially more difficult without him.

Buccaneers Defensive Front and Vita Vea’s Hold-In

Vea has attended camp without practicing. His agent has publicly raised the possibility of a trade, while Licht has said Tampa Bay has no plans to move him.

A back injury suffered during conditioning adds a physical issue to the contract dispute.

Vea is the structural center of Bowles’ defense. His ability to absorb double teams protects linebackers, closes interior running lanes and creates isolated rushes for Kancey.

A’Shawn Robinson provides valuable insurance, but he does not reproduce Vea’s complete impact.

Kancey returns after missing most of 2025 with a torn pectoral muscle. His interior quickness can transform the pressure package if he remains healthy. Bain, Yaya Diaby, Al-Quadin Muhammad and David Walker Jr. form a deeper edge group than Tampa Bay had last season.

Early betting angle: Do not assume Tampa Bay’s run-defense reputation remains unchanged if Vea is absent or limited.

Buccaneers Linebackers and Secondary

Anzalone steps into the communication role David held for more than a decade.

Rozeboom adds tackling production, while Trotter can earn an immediate rotational role. Bowles may use more safety involvement to compensate for the loss of David’s coverage instincts.

Antoine Winfield Jr. remains the secondary’s most important player. His range, blitz ability and tackling allow Bowles to disguise pressure.

Zyon McCollum, Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish are competing for two outside corner positions. Morrison’s recovery from hip surgery and a recurring hamstring issue has limited his work, increasing the importance of Parrish and rookie Keionte Scott.

The unit has athleticism. It must reduce coverage breakdowns and penalties in high-leverage situations.

Buccaneers Win-Total Analysis

Tampa Bay is the most likely NFC South winner without being a safe Over at 8.5.

Reasons to Consider Over 8.5

  • Mayfield is the division’s most established quarterback
  • Robinson’s system fits movement passing
  • Egbuka produced 938 yards as a rookie
  • Irving is fully cleared
  • Godwin, McMillan and Hurst create receiving depth
  • Wirfs remains an elite tackle when healthy
  • Kancey is returning
  • Bain can provide immediate pass-rush impact
  • The division lacks a dominant favorite
  • Tampa Bay won at least nine games in two of Mayfield’s three seasons with the team

Reasons to Consider Under 8.5

  • Evans is no longer on the roster
  • David retired
  • Mayfield is learning another offense
  • Vea is holding in and managing a back injury
  • Wirfs is dealing with a hamstring injury
  • The cornerback group has health and experience questions
  • Irving missed seven games in 2025
  • The schedule contains Cincinnati, Green Bay, Detroit, Baltimore and the Rams
  • Tampa Bay finished 2-7 after a 6-2 start last season
  • Nine wins are required to cash the Over

Pappy’s PlayBook Preseason Position

Pass at the current price, with a conditional Over lean.

The early projection is 9-8, placing Tampa Bay only half a game above the total.

Over bettors receive plus money, but +110 is not enough to ignore the Vea, Wirfs and receiver-room uncertainty. Under bettors must lay approximately -134 on a team that still has the division’s best quarterback.

Price to consider Over 8.5: +125 or better
Price to consider Over 8: -115 or better
Price to consider Under 9.5: -115 or better
Automatic pass: Significant injury to Mayfield, Wirfs, Egbuka or Winfield; Vea traded without an established replacement

Tampa Bay is the division’s best team on paper. The current market still offers too little protection against its unusually concentrated preseason risk.

NFC South and Super Bowl Outlook

Tampa Bay is the favorite because quarterback stability matters more in this division than any other single variable.

The Buccaneers’ path is clear: Mayfield plays at a top-12 level, Robinson restores the running game and the defensive front creates pressure without exposing a young secondary.

At approximately +175, the division price is too short before Vea and Wirfs receive clearance.

Division price to monitor: +225 or better
Make-playoffs price to monitor: +150 or better
NFC price to monitor: +3000 or better
Super Bowl price to monitor: +7500 or better
Current recommendation: Pass

Weekly Buccaneers Betting Angles to Monitor

Confirm Wirfs’ Availability

Active status is not enough. Track full practice participation and whether Tampa Bay gives him normal one-on-one pass-protection responsibility.

Measure the Offense Without Evans

Evaluate red-zone targets, third-down conversion routes and performance against press coverage. Total receiving yards will not fully show whether Tampa Bay has replaced Evans’ influence.

Track Robinson’s Early-Down Balance

The offense needs a better running game without becoming predictably conservative. Compare first-down pass rate with success rate.

Resolve Vea’s Status

Vea’s presence changes Tampa Bay’s rushing-defense and pressure projections. A hold-in that reaches the regular season would require a material downgrade.

Test the Young Corners

Opponents will isolate Morrison, Parrish or Scott until the competition produces dependable starters. Receiver props against Tampa Bay deserve early attention.

Respect Bain’s Development

Rookie pass rushers are volatile, but Bain’s power can create immediate production. His snap share matters more than preseason sack totals.

Adjust for the Schedule Clusters

The Thursday trip to Dallas, the Chicago–bye–Detroit sequence and the late Baltimore-plus-division stretch all require rest and travel adjustments.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fantasy Football Targets

Safest Target: Emeka Egbuka

Egbuka has the clearest target path and can be moved around the formation to avoid difficult coverage.

Best Bounce-Back Candidate: Bucky Irving

Irving is healthy and has already demonstrated elite efficiency. His cost must reflect the injuries and Gainwell’s passing-down role.

Best Quarterback Value: Baker Mayfield

Mayfield remains a useful late-round option for managers who wait at quarterback. He is more attractive when paired with Egbuka.

Best PPR Value: Chris Godwin

Godwin’s slot role provides a dependable reception floor when he is fully healthy.

Best Late-Round Receiver: Jalen McMillan

McMillan can lead the team in perimeter routes and offers touchdown upside at a lower cost than Egbuka.

Best Rookie Sleeper: Ted Hurst III

Hurst has the size and speed to earn a true outside role. He is most attractive in best-ball and deep leagues.

Best Tight-End Value: Cade Otton

Otton’s playing time and quarterback trust make him a reliable TE2.

Player to Draft Carefully: Bucky Irving

The warning concerns price, not ability. Irving is attractive as an RB2 but risky if drafted as though his rookie efficiency and full health are guaranteed.

Buccaneers Defense and Kicker

Tampa Bay’s defense has streaming upside because Bowles manufactures pressure and Bain adds disruption. It should not be treated as an automatic weekly starter until Vea returns and the corner positions stabilize.

Chase McLaughlin remains a useful fantasy kicker because of his range and Tampa Bay’s ability to reach scoring territory.

Best-Case Scenario

Mayfield responds to the contract year with another Pro Bowl-level season.

Egbuka becomes a true No. 1 receiver, Irving returns to his rookie efficiency and Robinson creates a balanced offense without a long adjustment period.

Vea returns, Kancey stays healthy and Bain gives Bowles the edge rusher the defense has lacked. The young corners develop quickly.

In that scenario, Tampa Bay can win 11 games and reclaim the NFC South.

Worst-Case Scenario

The fifth offensive system in five years creates early inconsistency, and the offense cannot replace Evans in the red zone.

Wirfs misses time, Irving’s injuries return and Mayfield presses while playing without a long-term contract.

Vea’s dispute continues, Kancey struggles after his pectoral injury and the young secondary cannot survive Bowles’ aggressive pressure calls.

In that scenario, Tampa Bay can finish 6-11 or 7-10.

Final Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2026 Prediction

The Buccaneers remain the most complete team in the NFC South.

Mayfield provides a level of quarterback certainty the other three teams do not have. Egbuka, Godwin, McMillan, Irving and Otton give Robinson enough talent to produce an above-average offense without Evans.

The defense has more pass-rush potential than it did last year.

The projection cannot ignore Vea’s hold-in, Wirfs’ hamstring, the cornerback competition or the loss of David’s leadership. Tampa Bay may be the favorite by default more than by dominance.

Projected record: 9-8

Projected finish: First or second in the NFC South

Playoff outlook: Division contender with a realistic Wild Card path

Current futures recommendation: Pass

Early win-total lean: Over 8.5 only at +125 or better

Tampa Bay should remain competitive. The current +110 price does not create enough separation for a projection centered on exactly nine wins.
