College football bettors love looking backward.
Last season’s record. Last season’s offense. Last season’s defense. Last season’s quarterback statistics.
The problem is simple:
The team wearing the same uniform in 2026 may be completely different from the team that produced those numbers in 2025.
That is why college football returning production is one of the first things Pappy’s PlayBook evaluates before handicapping an early-season game.
The transfer portal, coaching changes, eligibility decisions and normal roster turnover have made offseason evaluation more important than ever. A team can replace its quarterback, three offensive linemen and half of its defense while casual bettors continue treating last year’s statistics as if nothing changed.
That creates opportunity.
But there’s another important lesson:
Returning experience isn’t automatically good experience.
The goal isn’t simply identifying which team brings back more players.
The goal is determining which production returned, where the continuity exists, whether those players were actually effective, and how it affects this specific matchup.
Returning Starters Don’t Tell the Whole Story
For years, one of the most commonly referenced preseason statistics in college football has been returning starters.
You might hear:
“Team A returns 16 starters.”
That sounds useful.
But it doesn’t tell the complete story.
A rotational defensive lineman who played 500 snaps last season may be more important than someone technically listed as a starter who played significantly less.
The same applies to receivers, defensive backs, linebackers and offensive linemen.
That’s why returning snap percentage can provide additional context.
CBS Sports recently calculated returning offensive and defensive snaps for all 138 FBS programs entering the 2026 season. The metric measures how much of each team’s actual 2025 workload returns for 2026 rather than simply counting starters.
That is much closer to what I want to know as a handicapper.
How much actual football experience is returning to the field?
Not All Returning Production Is Equal
This is where simply sorting teams by returning percentage can get bettors into trouble.
Suppose Team A returns 70% of its offense.
Team B returns only 40%.
Team A must have the advantage, right?
Not necessarily.
What if Team A’s offense ranked near the bottom of the country last season?
What if the returning quarterback struggled badly under pressure?
What if the offensive line returns nearly everyone but was consistently beaten at the line of scrimmage?
Continuity can help.
But continuity doesn’t automatically fix poor performance.
That’s why Pappy’s PlayBook looks beyond the percentage.
I want to know:
- Who is returning?
- What position do they play?
- How important was their role?
- How well did they perform?
- Are they playing in the same system?
- Does their experience create an advantage against this week’s opponent?
Returning production is a handicapping input, not an automatic betting signal.
Quarterback Continuity Matters More Than Most Positions
Early in the season, quarterback continuity deserves extra attention.
CBS Sports’ 2026 returning-snap data illustrates how extreme quarterback turnover has become. Forty-seven FBS programs return at least 70% of their quarterback snaps, while 78 programs return 30% or less.
In other words, a huge percentage of college football enters 2026 either with significant quarterback continuity or essentially starting over.
That’s important in August.
An experienced returning quarterback already understands:
- The terminology
- Protection calls
- Timing with receivers
- Red-zone packages
- Third-down concepts
- Audible systems
- How the coaching staff wants the offense operated
A new quarterback may eventually be better.
That doesn’t mean he will be better immediately.
Early-season football frequently rewards familiarity.
But quarterback experience becomes much more valuable when another position group also returns with him.
Quarterback + Offensive Line Is a Combination I Like to Study
One of the strongest early-season continuity combinations is an experienced quarterback playing behind an experienced offensive line.
The offensive line affects nearly everything.
Pass protection.
Running efficiency.
Third-down success.
Red-zone execution.
How comfortable the quarterback becomes when the defense creates pressure.
Communication becomes especially important during the opening weeks because offensive linemen haven’t had several games to work through mistakes together.
CBS found only seven FBS teams entering 2026 returning at least 70% of their snaps at both quarterback and offensive line: Army, Liberty, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and USC.
That’s the type of information worth investigating.
It doesn’t mean blindly betting those seven teams.
It means those offenses begin with a level of continuity that many opponents don’t have.
Then we ask whether the market has already priced that advantage correctly.
USC vs. San Jose State Is a Perfect Week 0 Example
Saturday’s Week 0 slate gives us a good example of why returning-production research matters.
USC hosts San Jose State.
CBS Sports’ latest numbers show San Jose State returning just 20% of its total snaps from last season, including only 24% offensively and 15% defensively. That puts San Jose State near the bottom of the entire FBS in returning continuity.
USC presents a very different offensive picture.
The Trojans return 95% of their quarterback snaps and 79% of their offensive-line snaps from 2025.
That matters.
But here’s where handicapping differs from simply reading statistics.
The conclusion should not automatically be:
“USC has more continuity, therefore bet USC.”
We still need to consider:
- The enormous point spread
- How long USC keeps starters on the field with a large lead
- San Jose State’s incoming transfers
- Coaching approach
- Garbage-time scoring
- Second-half game script
- Whether the betting market already fully reflects the continuity gap
The personnel information helps explain the matchup.
The betting number determines whether the matchup is worth betting.
Stanford Gives Us Another Interesting Week 0 Case
Stanford enters Saturday’s game against Hawaii with one of the highest returning-snap percentages in the country.
The Cardinal return 59% of their overall snaps, including 55% offensively and 64% defensively. CBS ranks Stanford sixth nationally in overall returning snaps.
But there’s an important wrinkle:
Stanford also changed coaches.
This is exactly why returning production cannot be evaluated in isolation.
Experienced players are valuable, but bettors also need to ask:
Are those players operating the same system?
A new coaching staff can change:
- Offensive terminology
- Blocking concepts
- Tempo
- Defensive responsibilities
- Coverage schemes
- Personnel usage
- Fourth-down decisions
Stanford might have considerable personnel continuity while simultaneously experiencing schematic change.
Both belong in the handicap.
Hawaii, meanwhile, returns approximately 40% of its overall snaps.
That gives us another example of what I want to compare before ever looking at the final betting decision.
Memphis vs. UNLV Shows the Other Extreme
Memphis enters Saturday’s Week 0 matchup at UNLV with one of the lowest returning-snap percentages in the country.
According to CBS Sports, Memphis returns only 10% of its overall 2025 snaps, including 14% offensively and just 6% defensively.
UNLV returns approximately 39% overall, including 33% offensively and 46% defensively.
That’s a major continuity difference.
But here’s the trap.
CBS’ returning-snap statistic measures production returning from the same team’s 2025 roster. It does not include the experience brought in through the transfer portal.
That distinction is extremely important in modern college football.
A team returning only 10% of last year’s snaps may have added multiple players who have already accumulated significant college experience elsewhere.
So if you simply see:
Memphis: 10% returning
and stop there, the handicap is incomplete.
The next question should be:
Who replaced those snaps?
The Transfer Portal Changed How Returning Production Must Be Used
College football roster building is no longer as simple as:
Senior leaves → freshman replaces him.
Experienced players now move between programs constantly.
That means there are really two different types of experience to evaluate.
Program continuity
Players who return to the same team and already understand the system.
College football experience
Transfers who may be new to the program but already have extensive FBS experience.
Those are not identical advantages.
A veteran transfer quarterback may have played 30 college games.
That’s valuable.
But he may still be learning new terminology, new receivers and a new offensive system.
A returning quarterback may have less overall talent but significantly more familiarity with what the offense is trying to accomplish.
This is why Pappy’s PlayBook doesn’t simply count returning players or transfers.
We evaluate how the pieces fit together.
Offensive Returning Production Can Be Misleading Without Position Context
Imagine two offenses each return 50% of their snaps.
They look equal on paper.
But suppose Team A returns:
- Starting quarterback
- Four offensive linemen
- Starting running back
While Team B returns:
- Two receivers
- Two running backs
- Tight ends
- Almost no quarterback or offensive-line experience
Those are very different situations.
That’s why I place more importance on where the continuity exists.
For early-season betting, I’m particularly interested in:
Quarterback
The player responsible for operating the entire offense.
Offensive line
The group responsible for protection, communication and run blocking.
Quarterback-to-receiver continuity
Timing can matter early.
Running back
Important, but generally easier to replace than quarterback or offensive-line continuity.
A raw overall percentage can hide these differences.
Defensive Returning Production Needs the Same Treatment
Defense works the same way.
Returning six starters doesn’t tell me enough.
Where are they returning?
A veteran secondary can be extremely valuable against an opponent introducing a new quarterback.
An experienced defensive front can create major problems for a rebuilt offensive line.
Returning linebackers may provide better communication against complicated run schemes and play-action concepts.
CBS’ 2026 data shows why position breakdowns matter. No FBS program returns at least 70% of its snaps across all three major defensive groups—defensive line, linebacker and defensive back.
True defensive continuity is difficult.
That’s another reason early-season matchups require more than simply pulling last year’s defensive rankings.
Coaching Continuity Belongs in the Equation
Returning players become even more valuable when the coaching staff remains intact.
The terminology stays familiar.
The scheme stays familiar.
The responsibilities stay familiar.
But when a new head coach or coordinator arrives, part of that advantage can disappear.
Interestingly, CBS found that 21 of the 32 FBS teams with the lowest overall returning-snap percentages also changed head coaches.
That’s a lot of change happening at once.
New players.
New systems.
New terminology.
New expectations.
That doesn’t mean those teams will struggle all season.
It means there may be more uncertainty in August than the betting market can perfectly measure.
And uncertainty is something bettors need to respect.
Returning Production Is Most Valuable Early in the Season
The importance of returning production gradually changes as the season develops.
By October, we have current information.
We know whether the new quarterback can play.
We’ve watched the offensive line.
We’ve seen the new defensive system.
We understand the rotation.
We know how the transfers fit.
In August and early September, we don’t have that luxury.
That makes roster continuity particularly useful during the opening weeks.
It helps answer one of the most important questions in early-season college football betting:
How much confidence should we have that this team will immediately resemble what we’re expecting?
The more continuity a team has at important positions, the smaller some of those unknowns become.
Returning Production Is Not a Betting System
This part is important.
I would never recommend blindly betting teams with higher returning-production percentages.
Sportsbooks have access to this information too.
There is no secret database showing USC returns more experience than San Jose State that bookmakers somehow forgot to check.
The edge comes from combining the information properly.

- Quarterback matchup
- Coaching
- Offensive-line play
- Defensive front
- Transfer additions
- Injuries
- Pace
- Schedule
- Travel
- Game script
- Market movement
- Betting price
Then everything comes back to the number.
Last Year’s Record Isn’t This Year’s Team
This is the main takeaway.
When you’re handicapping college football in August, stop thinking exclusively about how a team finished last season.
Ask:
Who produced those results?
Then:
How many of those players are still here?
Then:
Who replaced the players who left?
Then:
Are they playing in the same system?
Then finally:
Has the sportsbook already accounted for all of it?
That’s how returning production becomes useful.
Not as a betting system.
As a way to understand what the team taking the field actually looks like right now.
How Pappy’s PlayBook Uses Returning Production
Before an official early-season college football wager makes the board, I want to understand:
Quarterback continuity: Is the starter returning, experienced elsewhere or completely untested?
Offensive-line continuity: How many meaningful snaps return up front?
Skill-position turnover: Who is replacing lost production?
Defensive continuity: Which levels of the defense remain intact?
Transfer experience: Did the program replace departures with proven college players?
Coaching continuity: Are returning players operating the same system?
Matchup relevance: Does the returning experience actually create an advantage against this opponent?
Betting price: Has the market already accounted for the advantage?
And finally:
How does the bet lose?
Returning production can strengthen a handicap.
It should never replace one.
The Week 0 Approach
The 2026 FBS Week 0 slate begins Saturday with eight games, including North Carolina-TCU in Dublin, San Jose State-USC, NC State-Virginia, Hawaii-Stanford and Memphis-UNLV.
Before Pappy’s PlayBook makes any college football wager official, every matchup needs to be evaluated based on the team that exists today, not the reputation created by last year’s roster.
That’s especially important during Week 0.
There is no current-season film yet.
We’re trying to identify which teams should be ready immediately, which teams have legitimate questions and whether the betting market has priced those differences correctly.
The logo may be the same.
The team may not be.
